HAT MAKES the Brébeuf Hymnal special is that it’s based upon the core repertoire of Roman Catholic hymnody. Many other Catholic hymnals might be called “expurgated.” In other words, they begin with the Protestant tradition and remove (‘expurgate’) everything heretical or objectionable. Whatever’s left they declare to be a “Catholic” hymnal. As I said, the Brébeuf editors took a completely different approach. They started with—and built upon—the Catholic core tradition. Sometimes Protestant additions were allowed: e.g. “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” If you have not had an opportunity to study the pew edition of the Brébeuf Hymnal, this is something I would highly encourage. Our parish choral program would not exist without it, because its arrangements and melodies are very simple yet dignified.
Non-Catholic Books • This is not to say the Protestant tradition has “absolutely no value whatsoever.” For example, FOREST GREEN (Screenshot)—although of Protestant origin—is in my humble opinion an absolutely splendid melody. Indeed, I’d be hard-pressed to think of a more delightful tune.
King Of Protestant Hymnals • Personally, I have only attended Catholic services. For that reason, I very much doubt anyone cares about my opinion when it comes to Protestant hymnals. But if someone did seek my opinion, I would without hesitation point to the 1913 masterpiece of George Ratcliffe Woodward (d. 1934) as indisputable ‘king’ among Protestant hymnals. The title of his book is similar to Dr. Marier’s hymnal—and here it is:
“Songs of Syon: a collection
of psalms, hymns, & spiritual
songs set, for the most part,
to their ancient proper tunes”
