PDF Download: Mocquereau’s 1903 “Liber Usualis”

Jeff Ostrowski · July 25, 2014

AY BACK in 2007, Watershed began uploading hundreds of liturgical books which were freely downloaded by Church musicians everywhere. Many of the books were (and remain) extremely rare. One of the most important books we uploaded in 2008 was a complete copy of Dom André Mocquereau’s 1903 Liber Usualis. It seems that archive.org has followed our lead. More than half a decade later, they have scanned their own copy of Mocquereau’sbook, and made it available as a PDF file.

Surprisingly, their scan was poorly done—whereas archive.org usually does a fantastic job. In fact, the Watershed PDF is of a higher quality:

*  PDF Download • Solesmes Liber Usualis (1903) — «Paroissien Romain»
—The 1903 Liber Usualis of Dom André Mocquereau.

Liber usualis, Missae et officii
pro Dominicis et festis duplicibus:
cum cantu Gregoriano

Publisher = Romae: Descleé, Lefebvre & Soc.
Typis Societatis S. Joannis Evangelistae

THIS BOOK WAS Mocquereau’s great masterpiece, and it still excellent for reference purposes. Many of his variants are more beautiful than those found in Pothier’s Editio Vaticana, such as the 1903 version of Ut Queant Laxis.

Opinions by blog authors do not necessarily represent the views of Corpus Christi Watershed.

Quick Thoughts

Vespers Booklet (4th Sunday of Lent)
The organ accompaniment booklet (24 pages) which I created for the 4th Sunday of Lent (“Lætare Sunday”) may now be downloaded, for those who desire such a thing.

Vespers Booklet, 3rd Sunday of Lent
The organ accompaniment I created for the 3rd Sunday of Lent (“Extraordinary Form”) may now be downloaded, if anyone is interested in this.

    Weeping For Joy! (We Hope!)
Listening to this Easter Alleluia—an SATB arrangement I made twenty years ago based on the work of Monsignor Jules Van Nuffel—one of our readers left this comment: “I get tears in my eyes each time I sing to this hymn.” I hope this person is weeping for joy!

Random Quote

Far from dreading an encounter with the Iroquois, Fr. Garnier often told us he would be quite content to fall into their hands and remain their prisoner if—while they were torturing him—he at least had a chance of instructing them as long as his torments lasted. If they allowed him to live, it would afford him a golden opportunity to work for their conversion, which was now impossible, since the gateway to their country was closed as long as they were our enemies.

— Father Ragueneau (Jesuit Relations)
