This beautiful Cistercian Gradual was made for the Abbey of Vauclair (founded in 1134 by St. Bernard of Clairvaux at the request of the bishop of Laon) in the XIII Century. It is the first of two great Vauclair Graduals (the other being Vauclair Gradual 240). Its rich decoration consists of a multitude of blue and red watermarked letters, and three historiated initials, representative of the art of 13th century Parisian illumination, for the main festivals.
