Art of the Beautiful Lecture Series 2017-2018

Fr. David Friel · September 10, 2017

HERE EXISTS in New York City an organization devoted to supporting the vocation of artists. Formed in response to Pope Benedict XVI’s 2009 address to a Meeting of Artists, the Catholic Artists Society strives to support artists by encouraging their ongoing spiritual and artistic development. The society addresses the fraternal, spiritual, and intellectual needs of its members.

One of the ways in which the group promotes intellectual development is through an annual lecture series. This year’s lineup of speakers and topics looks excellent.

The 2017-2018 Art of the Beautiful Lecture Series will include:

September 23, 2017 • Mother Dolores Hart, OSB • Dean of Education at the Abbey of Regina Laudis

October 28, 2017 • Jem Sullivan, Ph.D. • Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception (Dominican House of Studies, Washington, DC)

December 2, 2017 • Ross Douthat • Op-Ed Columnist, The New York Times

February 24, 2018 • Duncan Stroik • Architect, Professor at the University of Notre Dame

March 24, 2018 • Rev. George W. Rutler, STD • Author, Pastor of the Church of St. Michael, NYC

April 28, 2018 • Rev. Innocent Smith, OP • Author, Vicar for Formation at the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer, NYC

The series is hosted at the Catholic Center at NYU (238 Thompson Street, just south of Washington Square Park). Lectures begin at 7:30 PM and are followed by a reception and the celebration of Compline. Admission is free for members of the society, while a donation is requested of non-members.

Quick Thoughts

23 May 2022 • FEEDBACK

From a reader: “I wasn’t looking for it. But, I stumbled across your hand-dandy arrangement of Pachelbel’s Canon. Jeff, this is the greatest thing since sliced bread! I had to play a wedding on Saturday. The bride requested the Canon. There were 11 bridesmaids! The organ loft is a football field away from the communion rail. It’s so difficult to play and keep checking the mirror. Your arrangement is absolutely genius. One can skip and choose which variations to use. The chord names are handy so that when my eyes are off the music, I always know where I am at. A thousand times thank you for sharing this arrangement!”

19 May 2022 • “Trochee Trouble”

I’m still trying to decide how to visually present the “pure” Editio Vaticana scores, using what is (technically) the official rhythm of the Church. You can download my latest attempt, for this coming Sunday. Notice the “trochee trouble” as well as the old issue of neumes before the quilisma.

16 May 2022 • Harmonized Chant?

This year’s upcoming Sacred Music Symposium will demonstrate several ways to sing the CREDO at Mass. This is because—for many parishes—to sing a full-length polyphonic CREDO by Victoria or Palestrina is out of the question. Therefore, we show options that are halfway between plainsong and polyphony. You can hear my choir rehearsing a section that sounds like harmonized plainsong.

Random Quote

“One must pray to God not only with theologically precise formulas, but also in a beautiful and dignified way. The Christian community must make an examination of conscience so that the beauty of music and song will return increasingly to the liturgy.”

— Pope Saint John Paul II (26 February 2003)
