HE FOLLOWING IMAGE of Josef Cardinal Frings is courtesy of fantastic Polish blog. There is a fascinating history of the interactions of Cardinal Frings and the young Fr. Josef Ratzinger, especially regarding revelations by Henri de Lubac which have recently come to light. In a nutshell, Frings was almost blind in the 1960s and relied very much on Fr. Ratzinger, one of his theological experts during Vatican II. Several crucial speeches—which ended up having an effect on the entire Church—were written/drafted by Fr. Ratzinger. Later on, Cardinal Ratzinger felt differently about things…but that’s another story. Moreover, when elected pope, Cardinal Ratzinger would once again make decisions affecting on the entire Church.
