Online Advent Calendars 2017

Veronica Brandt · December 9, 2017

xt3 Advent Calendar 2017 HAT WOULD ADVENT BE without Advent Calendars? Having a visual way to communicate how much time is left before Christmas can be useful in a house with children eager for parties and presents. It can also be mildly alarming for the adults as the days fly by.

This year I decided to cobble together an online Advent Calendar for my family. The plan was to have my kids put together material for each day. I underestimated the editorial support needed. You can see the results at advent.brandt.id.au.

For a more thoughtful source of inspiration this Advent, visit the xt3 Advent Calendar.

Xt3 began in the lead up to World Youth Day in Sydney 2008 and continues to be a Good Thing coming from Sydney, Australia. Each day reveals the Gospel reading of the day as well as a daily meditation from their collection of short recordings.

There are a few online services springing up for creating your own online Advent Calendar. Be sure to link to your favorite in the comments on our Facebook page.

Quick Thoughts

Once, after Mass, my pastor said he really loved the hymn we did. I said: “Father, that's Holy God, We Praise Thy Name—you never heard it before?” He replied: “But the way you did it was terrific. For once, it didn't sound like a funeral dirge!” Last Sunday, our volunteer choir sang that hymn. I think the tempo was just about right … but what do you think?

    Don’t You Agree About These?
If you want to make Jeff Ostrowski really happy, send him an email with effusive praise about the individual voice recordings for hymn #296. [Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass] They came out dazzlingly sensational, don't you agree?

    Choral Vowels? Yes? No?
Here's a live recording of one of the choral “warm-up” exercises my choir enjoys. It was taken during our rehearsal on 27 January 2023. It’s good to make sure each chord is perfectly in tune and balanced before moving to the next one. That only happens when each singer has the correct vowel. If you like, you can freely download that vocal exercise.

Random Quote

“Before any seminarian is accepted for ordination, he must not only strive for chastity but actually achieve it. He must already be living chaste celibacy peacefully and for a prolonged period of time—for if this be lacking, the seminarian and his formators cannot have the requisite confidence that he is called to the celibate life.”

— Archbishop Viganò (16 February 2019)
