Biography • Veronica Brandt

Veronica Brandt · January 16, 2013

VERONICA BRANDT has long searched for an easy way to become musically proficient, even choosing St Cecilia at her confirmation way back in the 1990s. After despairing of ever achieving a consistent practice routine, she branched off into studying computers, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Along the way she started attending the Latin Mass at the Maternal Heart of Mary Church. A young man named Peter helped her follow the Mass in her missal and so she married him and dived into raising and homeschooling six children.

The Engineering degree introduced her to an arcane typesetting system called TeX, which turned out to be useful for typing up Gregorian chant. Soon Veronica ended up typing music for different groups and thereby learning much about Gregorian chant. Being fussy about understanding the music she was hearing at Mass, she built up her own little book of hymns in Latin and English called A New Book of Old Hymns. In 2014 the book received an Imprimatur.

Veronica lives in the Blue Mountains and helps out with music at the weekly Latin Mass at Our Lady of the Nativity, Lawson served by FSSP Parramatta. More about her adventures in homeschooling, knitting and her husband’s drawings can be found at brandt.id.au. She still has major difficulty maintaining a consistent practice routine.

Quick Thoughts

    Don’t You Agree About These?
If you want to make Jeff Ostrowski really happy, send him an email with effusive praise about the individual voice recordings for hymn #296. [Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass] They came out dazzlingly sensational, don't you agree?
    —Jeff Ostrowski
    Choral Vowels? Yes? No?
Here's a live recording of one of the choral “warm-up” exercises my choir enjoys. It was taken during our rehearsal on 27 January 2023. It’s good to make sure each chord is perfectly in tune and balanced before moving to the next one. That only happens when each singer has the correct vowel. If you like, you can freely download that vocal exercise.

“Jeff, I wanted to personally thank you for your spiritual witness at the Symposium & often blogs that you write too. Praying that prayer in the mornings My God, my Father and my all (by Cardinal Merry Del Val), mentioning saints’ stories of Brébeuf, Jogues, John Vianney, monks who fought in WWII, their hard work in spite of terrible conditions, their relentless zeal for the faith, their genuine love for the laypeople they served, etc. Overall though—more than anything concrete I can point to that you did or said—it was your demeanor at the Symposium. I could tell you really absolutely love and believe the Catholic Faith. You don’t get that everywhere, even in Church circles. And your humility is what then makes that shine even brighter. It is super inspiring! God is working through you probably way more than you know.”

Random Quote

“You should try to eat their food in the way they prepare it, although it may be dirty, half-cooked, and very tasteless. As to the other numerous things which may be unpleasant, they must be endured for the love of God, without saying anything or appearing to notice them.”

— Fr. Paul Le Jeune (1637)
