Serving Latin Mass • Learn from FSSP Seminarians!

Corpus Christi Watershed · May 14, 2018

89022 Altar Boy FSSP OW WOULD YOU LIKE for your son to learn the proper method of serving in the Extraordinary Form? What if you could have them trained by seminarians from the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter? Does this sound too good to be true? Think again!

Alongside the Sacred Music Symposium, there will be a special FSSP training camp for those who desire to serve at the Altar:

    * *  Direct Link: Register Instantly (FSSP.la)

Boys 12 and under have their own classes; so do boys 13 and older. All events take place at Saint Therese Catholic Church: 1100 East Alhambra Road; Alhambra, CA 91801. There is no cost, but a donation is requested to help cover the expense of feeding the participants—and young boys can eat a lot! (By the way, the Sacred Music Symposium still has a few spots available.)

Quick Thoughts

16 May 2022 • Harmonized Chant?

This year’s upcoming Sacred Music Symposium will demonstrate several ways to sing the CREDO at Mass. This is because—for many parishes—to sing a full-length polyphonic CREDO by Victoria or Palestrina is out of the question. Therefore, we show options that are halfway between plainsong and polyphony. You can hear my choir rehearsing a section that sounds like harmonized plainsong.

14 May 2022 • “Pure” Vatican Edition

As readers know, my choir has been singing from the “pure” Editio Vaticana. That is to say, the official rhythm which—technically—is the only rhythm allowed by the Church. I haven’t figured out how I want the scores to look, so in the meantime we’ve been using temporary scores that look like this. Stay tuned!

14 May 2022 • Gorgeous Book

If there is a more beautiful book than Abbat Pothier’s 1888 Processionale Monasticum, I don’t know what it might be. This gorgeous tome was today added to the Saint John Lalande Online Library. I wish I owned a physical copy.

Random Quote

Friedman met Egon Wellesz in Altaussee on one of the walks, and Egon started to speak about atonal music—and Ignaz replied: “No, no, no. Melody for me.”
