Colloquium Roundup

Fr. David Friel · July 8, 2014

NOTHER SUCCESSFUL CMAA Sacred Music Colloquium has come and passed. It was a glorious experience, made beautiful by tremendous music and made enjoyable by terrific fellowship. If you were not able to attend in person, you are not out of luck. You will find here a number of resources that will help you to tap into some of the experience from the comfort of home.

First, if you haven’t checked out my own summaries & reflections on the week, they are available here:

Colloquium Update I
Colloquium Update II
Colloquium Update III
Colloquium Update IV

For magnificent photos of the liturgies, check out the posts by Charles Cole at NLM:

Ben Yanke has posted an awesome series of short videos (vlogs) recapping the workshops, liturgies, and day-to-day events of the Colloquium over at the Chant Café. There you will also find a few reflections by Charles Culbreath:

Finally, one of the other priests in attendance at the Colloquium was Fr. James Bradley, of the Ordinariate. He has promised several reflections on his experiences in Indianapolis. These will be posted on his website, Thine Own Service:

Next year’s Colloquium will be held from June 29th to July 4th at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. (Naturally, I’m happy that the event is returning to my home state!) If you have never been to a Colloquium before, treat yourself. There is so much to be learned and experienced and enjoyed.

Quick Thoughts

16 May 2022 • Harmonized Chant?

This year’s upcoming Sacred Music Symposium will demonstrate several ways to sing the CREDO at Mass. This is because—for many parishes—to sing a full-length polyphonic CREDO by Victoria or Palestrina is out of the question. Therefore, we show options that are halfway between plainsong and polyphony. You can hear my choir rehearsing a section that sounds like harmonized plainsong.

14 May 2022 • “Pure” Vatican Edition

As readers know, my choir has been singing from the “pure” Editio Vaticana. That is to say, the official rhythm which—technically—is the only rhythm allowed by the Church. I haven’t figured out how I want the scores to look, so in the meantime we’ve been using temporary scores that look like this. Stay tuned!

14 May 2022 • Gorgeous Book

If there is a more beautiful book than Abbat Pothier’s 1888 Processionale Monasticum, I don’t know what it might be. This gorgeous tome was today added to the Saint John Lalande Online Library. I wish I owned a physical copy.

Random Quote

When we say: “The people like this” we regard them as unable to develop, as animals rather than human beings, and we simply neglect our duties in helping them towards a true human existence — indeed, in this case, to truly Christian existence.

— Professor László Dobszay (2003)
