“Pope Francis Hymn Book” … (Published 2014)

Corpus Christi Watershed · July 10, 2014

Important Update: In 2018, the Brébeuf hymnal was published:

*  Brébeuf Hymnal • “What Experts Are Saying”
(Testimonials from authorities on Sacred Music.)

The Brébeuf hymnal is sold by SOPHIA INSTITUTE PRESS.

The blog of the Church Music Association of America in 2019 said the Brébeuf hymnal is “hands down, the best Catholic hymnal ever to be published. […] Its copious selection of hundreds of tunes and texts, including favorites, forgotten gems, and new commissions, all beautifully formatted and presented in a surprisingly compact hardcover volume, is not only unparalleled by any other current hymnal, but well exceeds that of any hymnal I have seen from any period. […] It is such a fantastic hymnal that it deserves to be in the pews of every Catholic church.”

344 Pope Francis Hymn Book HE POPE FRANCIS HYMN BOOK consists of every hymn found in the Vatican II Hymnal, plus an additional forty-five (45) new hymns. Also included are nineteen (19) Gregorian Masses and six Creeds.

Quick Thoughts

PDF • “For the Season of Pentecost”
During the season of Pentecost, you might consider using this 2-page Piece “for the season of Pentecost.” Rehearsal videos are available at #40691, but the lyrics are different. Therefore, make sure your choir members understand that one can rehearse songs that have different lyrics (“CONTRAFACT”).
    —Jeff Ostrowski
    Introit • (This Coming Sunday)
Our volunteer choir appreciates training videos, so here's my attempt at recording “Exáudi Dómine Vocem Meam,” which is the INTROIT for this coming Sunday. This coming Sunday is Dominica Post Ascensionem (“Sunday after the feast of the Ascension”). It is sung according to the official rhythm of the Catholic Church.

    Volunteer Choir Attempts “Kýrie Eléison”
My volunteer choir attempted the polyphonic KYRIE that will be sung at this year's Sacred Music Symposium. If you're interested, you can listen to the live recording from last Sunday. The piece is based on the ancient plainchant hymn melody: Ave Maris Stella. Polyphony like this is truly intricate and wonderful. It reminds me of the quote by Artur Schnabel: “music that's greater than it can be performed.”

Random Quote

“Vatican II did not say anything about the direction of the celebrant. […] I love both directions of celebrating Mass. Both are full of meaning for me. Both help me to encounter Christ—and that is, after all, the purpose of the liturgy.”

— Christoph Cardinal Schönborn (February 2007)
