"I am of the opinion, to be sure, that the old rite should be granted much more generously to all those who desire it. It’s impossible to see what could be dangerous or unacceptable about that. A community is calling its very being into question when it suddenly declares that what until now was its holiest and highest possession is strictly forbidden, and when it makes the longing for it seem downright indecent. Can it be trusted any more about anything else? Won’t it proscribe tomorrow what it prescribes today?"
— Pope Benedict XVI, writing in 1997

Videos • Popes open the Holy Door
published 10 December 2015 by Andrew Leung

OPE FRANCIS opened the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica on Tuesday to begin the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Here are two old videos of the Opening of the Holy Door. The first one was taken in 1950, before the Vatican II. Pope Pius XII opened the Holy Door to inaugurate the Holy Year.

And the second one was taken when Pope Paul VI opened the Holy Door in 1975, after the Vatican II. Notice that he almost got hit in the head by the cement falling off the door as it was being opened.
