“One must pray to God not only with theologically precise formulas, but also in a beautiful and dignified way. The Christian community must make an examination of conscience so that the beauty of music and song will return increasingly to the liturgy.”
— Pope Saint John Paul II (26 February 2003)

Going out 2x2
published 30 July 2012 by Dr. Ronda Chervin

At different times I have been in Legion of Mary doing door-to-door evangelization. I recall many years ago remarking that most people were not at home. It seemed as if the pets owned the houses and rented them out at night to the humans! I thought it would be better to go out to the Malls where the people were.

Here in Southern California, where I am living for part of the year, the Legion group I am in does what is called “Book Barrow.” It is run by Catholic Books and Gifts who are allowed by I-Hop to put up a kiosk with leaflets and rosaries outside their diner. The sign says Free Catholic Literature.

This I-Hop is right near the beach. A steady parade of people walk by. Some look like the usual happy beach-goers but there are enough people wearing demonic T-Shirts or looking like women “of the street” to make it pretty heavy just seeing them. I was feeling discouraged because of this “immersion” in the part of the culture that is anti-Christian. I stand around saying hello, offering literature, and praying the Jesus Prayer on my Mercy Chaplet beads.

Suddenly up came two young men in their late twenties. One was wearing a visible crucifix. Turned out they do young adult ministry in a nearby parish. Turned out they both wanted to be priests. Now what were their changes of meeting a seminary prof. by walking down the main drag in a beach town? I got to tell them about the late vocation seminary, Holy Apostles, you hear about on these blogs. My partner, a retired engineer who has been doing Legion for 50 years, told one about an organization that works with people who want to be priests or sisters or religious brothers but can’t apply until they pay off their debts. If they pass the scrutiny as to motive with this group they can start the process of seminary or postulancy.

And just in case we would forget that Legion is Mary’s work, guess what the item most wanted off our kiosk is? Plastic rosaries. Often the young people put them immediately around their neck. Maybe they see it as like a good luck charm, but they come with instructions how to pray the rosary. Seeing this, Ronda, the philosopher, thought: “Hmmmm. Maybe Mary knew when she taught St. Dominic the rosary that most people prefer beads to syllogisms.” After they left I yelled out happily “And the gates of hell shall not prevail.”
